As a result the number of Annual Reviews produced within the FTSE 100 has dropped dramatically over time, from 61% in 2006 to 19% in 2010. The majority of those companies producing an Annual Review are from the consumer services and financial services sectors where reporting remains an important element of the overarching corporate communications strategy. Many of these companies have large shareholder bases, which also incorporate a significant percentage of customers, and where brand and reputation management is central to those relationships. ’04 ’05 ’06 ’07 ’08 ’09 ’10 The online approach As time moves on, companies are increasingly utilising online facilities, as a result of stakeholder groups gradually becoming more digitally savvy. Innovation in this area is developing slowly, with companies taking it one step at a time to engage readers with interactive elements of HTML reports, interactive PDFs and even links to social networking sites. Interestingly, the majority of FTSE 100 companies (67%) provide an HTML Annual Report with a varying range of interactivity. A further 14% are taking the beginning steps into exploring the online reporting environment by producing an interactive PDF, allowing the user more extended facilities than the basic PDF, such as print baskets, search functions, Excel downloads, the option to build your own report and video or webcasts.
