anglo platinum 2009 Annual Report Basic Materials South Africa 4 actiOn Background: Anglo Platinum is the world’s leading primary producer of platinum group metals and accounts for about 40% of the world’s newly mined platinum. The Company strategy is to create maximum value through understanding and developing the market for platinum group metals, grow the Company to expand into those opportunities and to conduct their business safely, cost effectively and competitively. The Company has, since 2002, produced its Annual Report in two volumes. Volume 1 has been the Business Report, while Volume 2 has been the Sustainability Report, which has been compiled in accordance with the guidelines of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI). In order to give a complete overview of the business in one report, it was decided that the 2009 Annual Report would be a fully integrated, single-volume report. However, a more detailed Sustainable Development Report that contains additional detail and case studies is available on the Company’s website and can be downloaded. This review is in accordance with GRI and independently assured by PWC. Financial, social and environmental performance content review: Anglo Platinum’s 2009 Annual Report is the Company’s first fully integrated Annual Report. Responding to King III offers a complete overview of the Company’s financial, social and environmental performance in a single, consolidated report. Much of the information and data on the Group’s performance in terms of sustainability has now been integrated into the relevant sections of the Annual Report, including the CEO’s review and the sections on performance highlights, the business environment and business results. The Company strategy, objectives and values are clearly identified at the beginning of the report and this is positioned alongside the explanation of why Anglo Platinum has moved to producing an integrated Annual Report. It is clear that Anglo Platinum have identified issues which are specifically material to their business, due to the type and geographic spread of their operations, and reported accordingly. This Report presents separate sections which focus on individual topics such as HR, safety and environment as opposed to simply having an ‘in silo’ section dedicated to the umbrella term of sustainable development. Throughout these sections, any data presented is only through the narrative. A complete set of data for the non-financial statements has also been included in the company statistics section of the Report for ease of reference, and is found on pages 153 to 157. Summary: This is a good first step in the integration to a single financial, social and environmental report with much of the information and data on the Group’s performance in terms of sustainability integrated into the relevant areas of the business, including the CEO’s section on performance, business environment and results. The next step will be to reflect a more strategic and explicit link between the financials and non-financials. 12 The integrated journey
