company commentary Sasol annual review and summarised financial information 2010 focused and energised at Sasol we view integrated reporting as a journey. after many years of discovery, we have achieved a number of notable milestones in our quest to continuously improve the overall quality of our reporting. This journey began in 1995, when we were one of the first companies in South Africa to report on environmental issues and to address the impacts arising from our operations in a consistent and transparent manner. In 2002 we produced our first standalone Sustainable Development Report, followed by the inclusion of a sustainable development chapter in our Annual Report to provide a more comprehensive understanding of our sustainability issues for our stakeholders. In 2010, we made great progress towards integrated reporting by weaving in more sustainability issues throughout our Annual Report, thus providing a balanced, accessible and comparable account of the performance of our business in terms of material economic, social and environmental issues. Our determination to innovate has culminated in our present Annual Report which, we believe, is the definitive document that tells the full Sasol story. The information in the newly structured integrated report is further supported by the annual financial statements and the Sustainable Development Report where specific information can be found for those stakeholders requiring further detail. Each year we take a fresh approach to our reporting by conducting extensive benchmarking and by engaging with our stakeholders to find out which issues are most material to them at that time. We listen carefully and incorporate their feedback into our report planning. We also use the company risk matrix to determine the sustainability issues which are most significant and relevant in that reporting year. Looking ahead, key challenges for us include increasing the level of integration of our financial and sustainability information to create a clear understanding of our performance for our readers. We are also addressing the issue of assurance and we are preparing a combined assurance model, as recommended by King III. Ultimately, Sasol’s commitment to sustainable development runs deep – from the chief executive and Sasol board, right throughout the Company. Each year, we consult widely with our colleagues about our sustainability reporting – a process that generates real interest and involvement. The audit committee of the Sasol board has taken ownership of our Sustainable Development Report and is responsible for approving it, in accordance with the South African Framework for Integrated Reporting. At Sasol, we all take some responsibility for sustainability. We are committed to making a positive contribution to society and to our environment, while creating value to our shareholders as we go about our business. Through our reporting process we continue to push the boundaries by moving beyond compliance to focus on entering into a more challenging dialogue with our entire stakeholder base, to further inform our strategy and to build mutual trust. 58 The integrated journey
