The message from the CEO explains that the 2009 Sustainability Report brings together the Annual Report and Social and Environmental Report in a single publication, explaining how it’s an essential tool for transparency in monitoring, disclosing and rendering accounts to its stakeholders about its economic, environmental and social performance. The Report presents information about the company performance as a whole reflecting the integration among the three pillars of the corporate strategy: growth; profitability; and social responsibility. The contents of the Report are clearly explained through the materiality process that they have gone through to determine issue relevance. Social and environmental responsibility is reported as core to the overall business mission and strategy and this focus is maintained throughout the Report. The presentation of financial and sustainability issues are balanced throughout and there is even a section which provides the economic and financial results leading directly to Petrobras’ contributions to society and other indirect impacts. Data figures are provided throughout the Report which shows the significant attempt at demonstrating the relationship between the Company financial performance and the ‘non-financial’ issues reported. Summary: 2009 was the first year that Petrobras published a ‘Sustainability Report’ as their primary communications document, demonstrating the shifting commitment being made to economic, environmental and social performance.
